Have you ever wondered how container yards, which are so enormous in size, manage to function efficiently even in darkness?
Trucks keep on running, containers get lifted up, cranes perform their functions… All of this takes place in such large areas even when there is no sunlight at all. The only thing that allows this is proper high mast lighting for container yards.
Today, we would like to present to you a true project experience of how we implemented a perfect container yard lighting solutions at the container yard of JM Baxi in Uran, Maharashtra.
A container yard is a large outdoor space designed for storing and transporting shipping containers.
Picture it as a big car park – but in place of cars, there are:
This goes on without stopping at night as well. Hence, lighting becomes highly crucial for obvious reasons. It’s a core part of modern port lighting systems.
In this case, what was required is fairly simple yet extremely critical:
Thus, it wasn’t “light” that was required, but an efficient lighting system for the long term, including 40m high mast lighting.
For this purpose, Shine Concepts implemented a combination of indoor and outdoor lighting.
Indoor areas were fitted with Shine Q series 100W LED high bay lights
The LED light was important in enabling visibility within the storage sheds and dock lighting design.
Here comes the best part. Once installed, not only was it effective but it continued to be effective for many years.
Even after 4–5 years, these lights continue to give satisfactory performance without loss of light, which proves the advantage of industrial LED lighting.
Think of this now—these lights are mounted at a height of 40 meters, equivalent to 13–14 floors.
Instead of climbing every single time, there is a facility of lowering these lights manually.
This one feature made the entire process effortless and contributed to reliable container terminal lighting.
This is not your regular "lighting installation project"
It demonstrates the following concept: Good lighting cannot be defined only by its performance on the first day of commissioning. Its performance years down the line under heavy layers of dust and continuous usage makes it a great one.
In case of container handling facilities, good lighting involves:
As can be easily determined, there are three major factors that ensure such high effectiveness:
Once installed, the lighting installation performed consistently and reliably throughout the premises.
It demonstrates the following concept: Good lighting cannot be defined only by its performance on the first day of commissioning. Its performance years down the line under heavy layers of dust and continuous usage makes it a great one.
In the container yard:
In the warehouse and dock areas:
To summarize, the customer expressed satisfaction with both the quality of the lighting installation and its consistent operation over the years due to low lumen loss.
When entering a container yard in the evening and seeing everything lit, bright, and well-maintained—it is not a stroke of luck.
It is proper planning and engineering. The JM Baxi case from Uran proves the efficiency of the correct lighting system for long-term operations without problems.
Good lighting does not merely "light up a place"—it works effectively for the operation every day, unnoticedly.
